The Best Way to Spend One Day in Flåm, Norway

The town of Flåm is one of the most popular tourist stops in all of Norway, located at the cusp of one of the most famous fiords in the country: Sognefjord (home of the UNESCO protected Nærøyfjord). People will visit Flåm to enjoy its relaxed view of the fiord from up close, as well as all of its waterfalls! We’ve highlighted the best way to spend one day in Flåm as a first time visitor in the guide below. Happy traveling!

1. Breakfast at the Flåm Marina

To start your day, we highly recommend a stop in for breakfast at the Flåm Marina. Whether you are staying at this quaint accommodation overnight or not, anyone is welcome to stop in for breakfast from 7:00am – 10:00am! They are located around the bend from the central area of Flåm, providing a direct view down the fiord during your meal!

2. The Flåm Zip Line

Next up for the day, we recommend booking a zip line experience! The typical tour package offered in Flåm will provide transportation from the town rail station to the starting point of the zip line: Vatnahalsen.

The zip line offers a nice, thrilling ride through the valley, surrounded by beautiful mountains and trees! At the bottom, there is a rest area with tables and bathrooms to sit and relax at after your turn on the zip line.

3. Ride Electric Bikes Through Flåm Valley

From the landing area of the zip line, you have the choice to either take a bus ride back to Flåm through the valley – or you can rent electric bikes! We recommend taking the bike ride if you are able, as it allows you to have more time with the nature and offers the opportunity to hop off your bike to take great photos!

The valley was full of waterfalls and rainbows at every turn – and was definitely a highlight of our visit!

4. Cruise from Flåm to Gudvangen

When you’re all adventured out for the day, we recommend signing up for an evening cruise through the nearby fiord! The bike rental drop off area is located right in the heart of Flåm, and the cruise departure area is only a few hundred feet away!

These cruises can be booked in advance, though you can usually get tickets the same day as needed. Depending on the time you would like to spend out on the water, you can purchase a ferry ticket (cruise) that is round trip from Flåm to Gudvangen and back to Flåm, or you can just take the ferry one way and take a 20 minute bus ride back to Flåm when you are done!

The fiord cruise offers a close look at the UNESCO protected site of Nærøyfjord, and it is truly beautiful to see from the water!

5. Unwind at the Fjord Sauna

When you are back in Flåm, we recommend signing up for the Fjord Sauna! This is a floating sauna in Flåm where you can have your typical sauna experience, with the bonus of getting to jump into the cool fiord water to cool down in between sessions!

The sauna itself has a dipping area to the water, or if you would like you can also jump off of the roof area of the sauna to make a big splash in the fiord!

6. Dinner at Ægir Gastropub

There are a small handful of places to eat dinner at in Flåm, but our top recommendation would be the Ægir Gastropub for its fun viking themed atmosphere! This is a restaurant that fills up fast, so we do recommend making a reservation here in advance if you can!
