One Day in Segovia, Spain

Segovia is located in the center of Spain within the province of Castile & León. Designated a UNESCO World Heritage site, this beautiful and historical city is one of the most popular day trip destinations to those staying in Madrid.

1. Visit the Aqueduct of Segovia

The most iconic symbol of the city, you will not want to visit Segovia without stopping by the Roman Aqueduct. Fortunately, it is very hard to miss! Over 2500 feet long and nearly 100 feet tall, this centuries old aqueduct cuts right through the city.

The aqueduct was originally used to bring fresh water from the Rio Frío in the nearby Guadarrama Mountains to Segovia to supply the its fountains, baths, and pools – and is still put to use today!

The aqueduct is free for the public to visit, but is also included in many of Segovia’s walking tours if you’d like to learn about its history with a local guide as well.

2. Tour the Alcázar of Segovia

Next up is the Alcazar of Segovia, the prominent castle that looks as though it jumped right out of a storybook. Said to have been Walt Disney’s inspiration for Cinderella’s castle, the alcazar is equipped with everything from moats to drawbridges, throne rooms, a knight’s shining armor, and even pointed spires surrounding a balcony that overlooks all of Segovia.

Needless to say, you do not want to skip over the alcazar on your visit to Segovia.

Another reason the alcazar is on our short list for a day trip to Segovia is the stunning views it provides from its landing! There really is no better place to take photos of the city than from the landing of a view that was literally built for royalty.

3. Tour the Cathedral of Segovia

Another piece of history that will surely catch your eye is the Cathedral of Segovia. This cathedral is designed in a Gothic architectural style following the vision of Juan Gil de Hontañón. More than 500 years old, construction of this cathedral began in 1525 under the direction of King Carlos V.

The cathedral is another attraction on popular walking tours, but entrance tickets can also be purchased directly from the cathedral if you prefer to organize your trip on your own! Packages to choose from include general entrance fees, a guided tour of the tower, night tours, and more!

4. Enjoy Lunch in the Plaza Mayor of Segovia

After your tours of some of the most notable sites in Segovia, take a break and treat yourself to a nice lunch in the middle of Plaza Mayor, with the city’s beautiful cathedral to enjoy in the background.

There are many restaurants to choose from in the area – Restaurante José, Restaurante La Taurina El Ave Turuta, and Restaurante La Concepción to name a few – all of which should offer the choice of both indoor and outdoor seating.
