Dongcheng District

Our guiding light whenever choosing a place to stay is location, and in a city as big as Beijing I would say this is extra important. The Dongcheng District is one of the most central and hosts a lot of the city’s major attractions, including Tiananmen Square, Wangfujing Snack Street, the Temple of Heaven, and the Forbidden City. Specific areas of interest would be the Donghuamen Substrict or the Jingshan Neighborhood.

Xicheng District

Bordering the Dongcheng District is the Xicheng District, another central location in the city. This district is home to Jingshan Park and the National Center for the Performing Arts, but still walkable to most of the attractions in Dongcheng.

The Summer Palace

The Summer Palace was the destination that royalty would live in during – you guessed it – the summer season! This is primarily a UNESCO World Heritage site to be visited during the day, but if you’re looking for a truly unique experience there is a resort within the grounds to have a luxurious experience while in Beijing.

Residential Areas

For a bit less central (and possibly cheaper?) happy medium between the tourist areas and the outskirts of the city, you can check out hotels in the residential areas of the Xiangheyuan subdistrict or Zuojiazhuang subdistrict. This area is home to a lot of larger hotel chains, and is actually where our teacher set us up during our study abroad program.

Near the Airport

Lastly, if your preference is to be close to the airport to mitigate traffic going to and from for your flights, there are some hotels that cater to that need for you to choose from as well! They will be able to set you up with taxis to go into the central attractions as needed, so if this is your preference I’m sure your trip will go smoothly either way. 🙂
